Bacteriostatic Water (10 mL) is sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth in the vial after the stopper has been punctured, which means the vial can be accessed multiple times without contamination risk, provided standard aseptic technique is used. This is the defining difference between bacteriostatic water and plain sterile water, which is a single-use product once opened.
